Orthotics are custom support devices for the feet.

The foot provides 2 main functions: 1) Aids in locomotion, and 2) Acts as a shock absorber for the body. These functions are a very demanding job. The arch is capable of absorbing the repetitive jolts of walking, and protecting larger joints In the legs, hip and even back from wearing out and injury. Consider that the average person will walk 115,000 miles in a lifetime, the equivalent distance of walking halfway to the moon! Then add the stress of modern living, with its concrete floors and streets. Orthotics are made to balance instabilities and correct abnormal motions of your foot. Excessive motions lead to injury and pain.

As in the cases of flatfeet and high-arched feet, the foot structure can be twisted toward or away from the midline of the body. These and other structural variations can adversely affect the foot's ability to function properly. The result can strain ligaments in the foot, plantar fasciitis, lead to mechanical deformities, e.g. bunions, hammertoes, neuromas, heel spurs, arch strain, sagging joints, and result in aches and pains in the ankle, knee, hip, and low back.
